Dateline:  Carrollton, TX                                              January 24-25, 2015

Our guest correspondent was at it again this weekend - several boys got out to test there skills agains a couple of courses on another cool but beautiful winter weekend in the Great State of Texas.....

It has been said many times, golf is dangerous and that was proven last weekend.

Indian Creek Creeks Course - (the Donk HATES this fricking course - I am glad I was not there!)

Rusty smartly calls ahead to check on frost delay, while Curt and I sit in the restaurant area.

Curt starts off with 6-6-6 and realizes he can’t win any holes with a 6!

Rusty spends most of the day with lippen-fuckers and just burning the edges of the hole.

Steve needs a par on 18 to break 90. Finishes the hole with a 98. 3 in the water. AND - he still holds the coveted Red Ass!
Plantation –
Hole 1: Steve makes a nice 1 putt from 15 feet. Unfortunately he averages 2.5 putts per hole thereafter.

Hole 3: Joe is pictured hitting from the White Tee Box on #3. Unfortunately we were playing the Blues. This was his second shot. He has already twice said he’s playing so bad he wants to quit.

Hole 4: Joe is again struggling and wants to quit. He’s laying 7 about 80 yards short of the green. Steve talks him down off the ledge and Joe hunkers down and makes a 9 on the hole. Steve also makes 9, but he was pin high in 3.

Hole 7: Pictured are Kevin’s witnesses to a near hole-in one. Tap-in Birdie could have lipped out??

Hole 8: Matt’s 5th shot, after nearly being decapitated by his 3rd shot! Note his comment: “That’s what I was trying to do!”

Hole 9: Steve hits monster drive, but hits ball with Gap Wedge 60 yards into greenside bunker. Gap Wedge then thrown 55 yards next to Greenside Bunker. After 4 mighty swings, ball escapes greenside bunker. Oak Leaf Cluster!

Hole 10: Kevin is ready to tee of with 3-wood. Steve states that is enough club as long as you don’t go left too far. Kevin proceeds to yank the ball so far left it actually hits ground on the 18th hole side of the water, then goes in! See picture taken from normal 10th hole landing area, looking back at the 18th green. Those two little figures are Matt and Kevin.

Hole 18: With a McCune on the line, Matt drains 20 footer for par. Joe drains 15 footer to tie his par. Kevin drains 10 footer to save bogey after hitting tee shot into the water and hitting his 3rd shot from the tee. Steve drains 6 footer to halve the hole. Lotta strokes!
Congratulations to Mr. Rucker who had a birdie while birdie's watched!

Dateline:  The Colony   January 19, 2015  MLK Day!

We have a guest correspondent for this blog - our very own mechanic, the Jewish Lee Trevino - Steve Rude!

I was not able to participate because we hard working stiffs in the medical device industry have to work on federal holidays - unlike all the bankers, insurance geeks and accounting guys!

Here is a blow by blow description of what sounded like a fun day out on the links at the Tribute:

1) Steve burns hole in shorts while lighting cigar before tee-off. Important note: Shorts are being worn for the first time.

2) Capt. proclaims to have played the Pink Lady for 38 consecutive holes prior to tee-off. Promptly deposits in the creek on hole #1.

3) With absolutely zero wind, the booming voices of Capt and Kent carry easily over the course. New player Robert constantly having to re-set at address due to the jibber-jabber nearby.

4) Hole #3 tee box  – photo of Curt just prior to the “Swing and Release the Club” that occurred nearly a half dozen times through the day. Later he claims he felt as if he was releasing the club prior to contact.

5) Hole #4 – Steve and Robert win the hole – Steve cards a Nine and a Dot!

6) Hole #6 -Curt asks Steve to call his cell phone. Steve Calls and random player on Hole #4 answers.

7) Hole #7 – Capt hits approach of his life up on the green while group ahead is putting. Steve proceeds to 4 putt from 15 feet.

8) Hole #11 -Steve shows restraint while 4-chipping to impossible pin location.

9) Hole #13 – Kent gets Oak Leaf Cluster for club toss after poor chip.

10) Hole #13 – Curt close to RAM moment with a minor club slam and expletive on approach chip, which somehow lands within 8 feet and he makes his birdie putt

11) Hole #16 – Curt close to RAM moment with mild club toss after poor result from chip out of the hazard.

12) Hole #18 – Steve gets Oak Leaf Cluster for club toss after Drive goes OB

It's a good thing that Stevie and Kent own the combo Red Ass trophies or they would be trading them back and forth!!!!!

Let's end with a moment of silence for our dearly departed Pinky!

Dateline:  January Golf in the Great State of TX!            January, 18, 205

The weather cooperated this weekend and a few of us got out and played three times over the weekend.  In fact, the Captain and the Mechanic are going to four in a row as they will extend the weekend one more day by playing Tribute today.

Here is a recap of some of the fun.

The Life and Times of Pinky the Golf Ball

At press time, Pinky the Ball has been in play for 38 consecutive holes by the Captain.  By his own estimation, this is some kind of a record.  Most balls have an average life span of three hits when put in play by the Captain.

Pinky has improved the Captain's play!  He almost broke 90 on Friday and Saturday before falling back to the mean on Sunday.  Will Pinky continue the streak today?  We wait with baited breath!

Here is a glamor shot of Pinky:

Here is the Captain putting Pinky in play - short and straight!

MLK Monday Update!  Pinky died today - drowned in the creek in front of the green on #1 at Tribute.

The Mechanic Faces A Tough Shot

During play at Riverchase on the always tough 16th hole, Steve "The Mechanic" Rude was faced with a tough lie after his approach shot.  What makes this funny is that the Captain and I were on the green watching the Mechanic line up, get some grip and find a stance.  While watching, the all seeing Captain whispers to me:  "His next shot will be from the bunker."  Sure enough, the Captain called the shot.

Here is the first shot:

Here is the second shot:

Trick Shots

The weekend was filled with a few trick shots.

On Friday, I managed to hit a cart sign on a drive on the 15th hole at Riverchase.....for some reason, the course wanted the carts back on the cart path 200 years away from the green!

I watch Mike Lasky almost kill himself with a four iron.  He was attempting the always tricky "stinger" through a narrow opening in some pecan trees at Pecan Hollow.  It's too bad greens aren't like trees - no matter how much you try to AVOID a tree, you usually manage to hit them.

In this case, Mike hit the tree hard and square - enough to have to duck as whitey came whizzing
back after the ricochet like a round out of a deer rifle!

But the trick shot of the weekend goes to our Canadian friend, Brian Harley.  Eye witnesses report that Brian perfectly executed a giant, looping fade (some would call it a SLICE!) that ended in a loud CRACK!  As is normal after most of our shots, a search party was sent out and after a few minutes, whitey was discovered in the crook of the branches....wow!   Brian declined to hit the ball from its found location.....eh!

Rusty Explains the Local Rules at Great SW

The picture explains everything.....Rusty imparting some local knowledge about the course, the Captain reacting with his country wit!

It was a great weekend - the year is not even 3 weeks old and we've already hit a ball into the branches of a tree - only the podsies!!!!!

Dateline:  Coppell    January 12, 2015

It is the end of a long business day and as I wrap up a day of fire fighting, problem solving and making people smirk, I am pondering our past golfing efforts.....and a smile comes to my face!

Yesterday while watching the Cowboys get robbed during their playoff game, there was a discussion about my first post on this blog highlighting the top 10 craziest events out on the course.

During the conversation, we explored some things that happened BEFORE and AFTER teeing whitey up on a peg...

Exhibit A:  (Before the course) This photo illustrates what happens if you are Dave McCune trying to use a coupon at Coyote Ridge.  Sorry, this isn't what happens when you try to use a coupon.  When you try to use a coupon, you just get told they don't accept coupons.  This happens to you when you tell the club pro to charge your gas credit card any amount he feels is fair including a tip for himself for being a JACKASS!

Exhibit B:  (After the course) This photo was shot moments after the captain's last drink one day at Indian Creek.  Apparently, medication, wind conditions, phase of the moon and a few other elements contributed to the captain being over served to the point of regurgitation .....as the podsies were scattering (and laughing), one bar maid was hear - "they can fire my f..ing ass before I'm gonna clean that up!"

Two classics - enjoy your day.....more to follow on Memory Monday!

Dateline:  Coppell    January 6, 2015

Captain - I found something that belongs to you!

Boys - I ordered a box of "gently used" golf balls from the Golfsmith website - they arrived yesterday and I opened the box this morning....

I was pretty happy with the quality of the golf balls - the quality was very high - non of the balls looked like they had been hit more than once or twice.

However, upon closer inspection, I've decided to return the whole box because I'm worried that these balls have been contaminated by a "bad apple"

Amazing!

Glen Rose - 2014

I was going through some old photos and found this winner.  It just makes me smile.  I think the Senator went out after the photo and stroked a smooth 95.  Old Pop Corley executed a perfect "tuck and roll" exit out of our cart while trying to retrieve a ball.....it was a great way for me to start my first week back at work....

I'm suprised Rusty was able to swing his clubs after travelling with this carnival!

Dateline:  Jan 3, 2015  Texas Star Golf Course

After two solid days of rain, the clouds parted to allow a little golf.  The course was in outstanding shape!  Texas Star has new greens and new sand traps.  I can attest that the traps are outstanding.  I think I spent a little time in almost every one of them!

It was a little chilly on number one but by the second nine, we were taking off layers.

Here are some pictures on hole 1:

I especially like the expression on Wayno - apparently, he is still channelling his inner "Blunder" - the missing reindeer!

Yes, that is Mr. Randy Glavan in group 1 - we were out numbered by Longhorns today!  And, team Randy and Curt won 1st prize for the day - they got out of the gates fast with a couple of birdies in the first 6 holes.  On number 7, Randy went to the dark side and they limped in for the win.  We had a historic 4 place tie for 2nd - I don't think I've ever seen that happen before.

Take a close look at the person on the right in picture 2 - Yes, it is Mr. Etter!  Here's a picture of him about 3 minutes earlier:

Yes, he is putting his shoes on - the boy just doesn't know how to be early - but, we were happy he joined us today!

Mr. Rude is keeping a couple of streaks alive ....
  • He finished in the money again.....he is really becoming "mechanical" about winning!
  • He gets to add an "oak leaf cluster" to the red ass - on 13 the club went for a ride after 7 strokes from right next to the green (for you guys not in the military, when you win a medal a second time, you add a small oak leaf cluster on the ribbon so every knows you've won it more than once)
  • He soiled his trousers again this week - this time because Kent surprised him by driving through a tunnel the wrong way and almost crashing into his cart head on.  There were no mentions on whether or not he yelled "oy!" because all you could hear were the brakes and the cart skidding sideways.
Finally, here is a picture of Wayno hitting one of the $20 winning shots on number 18 when my brother and I tried to McCune Wayne and Jeff unsuccessfully....

I'm looking forward to the next outing....
